Bridgette Watts & Peter Booth
In
2007, two young Tasmanians
undertook the adventure of a lifetime, cycling from the UK to Tasmania.Bridgette Watts, a doctor at the Royal Hobart Hospital, and Peter Booth, an architect and graduate of the University of Tasmania, have been working together for three years to make their dream journey possible.
They hope that completing the 20,000km ride will make a difference by raising awareness of how most of the world lives, letting people know what they can do to help, promoting cycling as a sustainable form of transport and raising $20,000 for Oxfam Australia.
In
2002, Bridgette took part in
the Oxfam Australia Cycle Challenge in Cambodia. It was a life changing
experience, and got her thinking about doing something similar.
However, as a student, her germinating dream was put on hold for
financial reasons. She completed her training, and became a
qualified doctor, saving and researching all the while. In 2004 Bridgette met Peter, an architect with an unfulfilled passion to see the world. Although Peter “wasn’t a very outdoors type person” under Bridgette’s influence he discovered the joys of bushwalking and cycling. When Bridgette told him about her plans for a cycling adventure, he volunteered to join the team immediately.
The pair continued saving money, Peter bought a bike, and their plans began to take shape. After much research they decided that following a set route would be too difficult, and that it would be better to “just state where [they] would start and finish.”
Since December in 2006, Bridgette and Peter have been living in London; Bridgette studying for a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Peter working as an architect. Their journey begins in May 2007.
