A fairer world - The Tasmanian Center for Global Learning
Did you know?
  • Many individual countries spend over the 3% average of GDP that the world spends on defence – more than half of the Cambodian national budget is spent on defence and security. *
  • Over three-quarters of Australia’s major bilateral aid programs operate in countries that are experiencing, recovering from or are vulnerable to conflict. *
  • Throwing themselves into peace processes with enormous courage and determination, women in politics, through their often unseen and unsung work, are bringing peace to many troubled countries. *

Peace initiatives and conflict resolution

"Peace is a process which never ends; it is the result of innumerable decisions made by many persons in many lands. It is an attitude, a way of life, a way of solving problems and of resolving conflicts. It cannot be forced on the smallest nation, nor can it be imposed by the largest. It can neither ignore our differences nor overlook our common interests. It requires us to work and live together."
Oscar Arias Sanchez, Nobel Peace Prize winner and former President of Costa Rica*.

Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is a way of living and relating to one another that requires understanding, open-mindedness and a willingness to negotiate – qualities that are all too often neglected in the pursuit of narrow economic interests.

At a time when key resources such as oil and water are becoming increasingly scarce, when environmental disasters are becoming commonplace and when weapons of mass destruction are widely available, the achievement of global peace must be seen not as a luxury or fantastical ideal, but as a prerequisite for human survival.

Ultimately, this must involve breaking down the national, economic and ideological divisions that perpetuate non-cooperation and conflict.

Breaking down the barriers between 'us' and 'them'

Laying the foundations of peace begins with recognising the humanity of one's so-called enemies.

  • The Peace Initiatives Institute aims to foster understanding and tolerance among young children living in conflict-afflicted areas.

  • Seeds of Peace brings together groups of teenagers from groups that have traditionally regarded each other as enemies.

  • World Citizen Inc is a non-profit organization that promotes a just and peaceful world through activities for children and youth.

Researching peace and negotiating peaceful outcomes

Many organisations have been established to undertake research into peace and conflict resolution. Others exist primarily to facilitate the peaceful resolution of civil and international disputes.
Promoting peace as a way of life

Many teachers and organisations, both religious and secular, promote the understanding that personal ('inner') peace and global peace are inextricably related.

  • The World Peace Prayer Society maintains a Peace Pals program, 'designed to encourage young people ages 5-15 to become peacemakers dedicated to living in the spirit of the words May Peace Prevail on Earth'.

  • Common Peace (formerly the Centre for the Advancement of Nonviolence) promotes nonviolence as a way of life through education, inspiration and cooperative action.
