School Award

The Human Rights School Award was introduced in 2008 by the Tasmanian Centre for Global Learning.  The aim of this award is to acknowledge work in Tasmania by schools or school-based groups that have promoted human rights in schools and/or the wider community.

The Award is presented at a ceremony during Human Rights Week in December. The Award  includes a prize of $500 - to be used by the school/group to further its human rights activities - generously provided by Anthony and Elizabeth Peacock.

All Tasmanian schools and school-based groups are invited to apply or be nominated for this award. Eligibility, criteria and access to a nomination form can be found below.

 

Eligibility

The following may be nominated to receive a Tasmanian School Award for Humanitarian Activities:

  • Tasmanian schools.
  • Tasmanian school-based groups.
Nominations must be on the School Nomination Form.

Any nominated activity must be authenticated by two referees or witnesses and by appropriate documentary support.

The documentation must fully describe the nature and extent of the nominee’s activities and address the criteria described below.

Criteria

Award winners are selected from those who are actively engaged in the promotion/protection of human rights relevant to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The winner will be expected to have convened activities relating to one or more of the following.

  • Promoting equal opportunity and anti-discrimination for the dignity and rights of all human beings
  • Increasing understanding of human rights
  • Promoting respect towards people of different gender, religions, races, colour or ethnic and social backgrounds and abilities
  • Working with people with intellectual, physical, sensory or psychiatric disabilities
  • Promoting the protection of the rights of young people and children
  • Promoting civil, political and social rights
  • Working for peace
In making the award the following criteria will be taken into consideration:
  • Impact of the work in terms of increased community awareness and concern
  • Amount of time and resources that have been devoted to the activities
  • How cooperation, harmony and growth in public understanding have been fostered
  • How initiative and innovative practices have been demonstrated
