(for individuals and
organisations other than schools and school-based groups)
For eligibility, criteria and nomination form for schools and
school-based groups go to School Award for Human
Rights Activities.
Eligibility
The following may be nominated to receive a Tasmanian Award for
Humanitarian Activities:
- Individuals and organisations.
- Those who are Tasmanian based i.e. either currently living in
Tasmania or an organisation which is based in Tasmania.
Nominations must be on the official
nomination form.
Any nominated activity must be authenticated by two referees or
witnesses and by appropriate documentary support.
The documentation must fully describe the nature and extent of the
nominee’s activities.
Nominations should be lodged by late October 2008, to:

Criteria
Award winners are selected from those who are actively engaged
in a voluntary capacity in the promotion/protection of human rights
relevant to the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and have made a major
contribution in their field.
It is expected that the activities will have taken place in a
context relating to:
- The promotion of equal opportunity and anti-discrimination for the
dignity and rights of all human beings
- Increasing understanding of human rights for the promotion of
greater respect and harmony between those of different gender,
religions, races, colour or ethnic and social backgrounds and
abilities
- Working with people with intellectual, physical, sensory or
psychiatric disabilities
- The promotion and protection of the rights of young people and
children
- The promotion of civil, political and social rights
- Working for peace
In making the awards the following factors will be taken into
consideration: of the person/s’ or organisation/s’ work in terms of
community awareness being increased and that the area has become one
of community concern Amount of time and resources that have been devoted to the
activity
Degree to which cooperation, harmony and growth in
public understanding have occurred
Extent to which
initiative and innovative practices
have been demonstrated
Degree to which the work has been undertaken on a
voluntary
basis
The Human Rights Week Organising Committee
will select award winners, according to the published
criteria.

Office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner. For more
