Angus Downie Print Journalism Award

The Award commemorates the work of journalist, author and rights activist the late Angus Downie who wrote for the Hobart Mercury, The Examiner, numerous interstate and overseas publications and the now defunct Nation Review.

Among his many awards and achievements were the 1968 inaugural Young Australian of the Year Award (for writing), the inaugural 1977 Tasmanian Journalist of the Year and an AM in 1994.

Angus was a passionate advocate for the rights of people with disability in particular and in 2002 received an award from the Australian Human Rights Commission for his work on the development of the Transport Standards for accessible public transport.

This award will recognise the work of an individual, individuals or organisation which has been published in any Tasmanian print newspaper or magazine.

To be eligible for nomination, the article or article series should make an outstanding contribution to the understanding, promotion or protection of human rights in Tasmania in at least one of the following ways and have been published between 1 January and 31 October in the year of the award:
  • investigating and reporting on injustice or inequality in Tasmania.

  • encouraging the promotion of rights and inclusion for people with disability in Tasmania.

  • encouraging action to overcome discrimination or infringements of human rights in Tasmania.

  • encouraging greater understanding of and respect for diversity in Tasmania.
The winner will receive a certificate and $1,000 at the Human Right Day Awards Ceremony in December.

Nominations must be on the Angus Downie Print Journalism Award Nomination Form.

Human Rights Awards (4 awards):
  • Individual
  • Organisation
  • Youth
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Community (CALD) focussed activity


  • Individuals or organisations may be nominated to receive an award where they are Tasmanian based that is, either currently living in Tasmania or an organisation that is based in Tasmania.

    The winner will be expected to have undertaken activities relating to one or more of the following:
    • Promoting human rights and peace through, for example, education, practical activities and/or advocacy.

    • Promoting equal opportunity and non-discriminatory attitudes and practices.

    • Increasing community understanding of human rights for the promotion of greater respect, diversity, inclusion and harmony.

    • Challenging human rights barriers and/or breaches.

    • The CALD-focused activity award will be awarded to a person or organisation who has undertaken these types of activities with a focus on culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Tasmania.
    In making the awards the following will be taken into consideration:
    • The impact of the work/activity on increased knowledge, understanding and respect for human rights, including but not limited to equal opportunity and non-discriminatory attitudes and practices.

    • The impact of the work/activity in terms of increased community awareness and concern.

    • The contribution made by the work/activity on the removal of barriers and to the challenging of human rights breaches.

    • The amount of time and resources that have been devoted to the activities/work.

    • How co-operation, harmony and growth in public understanding have been fostered.

    • Extent to which initiative and innovative practices have been demonstrated.

    Awards are given in the categories of Individual, Organisation, Youth and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Community (CALD) focussed activity.

    The winners will receive certificates at the Human Right Day Awards Ceremony in December.

    Nominations must be on the Human Rights Award Nomination Form.

    Any nominated activity must be supported by two referees and can include supporting documentation.

    The nomination should fully describe the nature and extent of the nominee’s activities and address the criteria described below.

    The Tasmanian Human Rights Week Judging Panel will select award winners according to the published criteria.
