Rose Bay
High gets MAD about Poverty
By Megan
Hughes, Grade 10
The focus of our MAD project was to raise awareness and funds for the Oaktree
Foundation and the Make Poverty History campaign. We
wanted to get the students of Rose Bay interested and aware of global
issues.
Events
Our first event was an Oaktree Day. On this day we arranged lots of
activities. They were:
- Free dress day for a gold coin donation, over 500
students involved.
- Whole school assembly where we showed a DVD called
‘Beyond Me’ which showed the Oaktree Foundation's
work in South Africa. Following this DVD Ruth Barnett and I made a
speech about the Oaktree Foundation.
- In the class following assembly all classes were
involved in activities concerned with issues about poverty and the
MDGs. Also in this class every student cut out 2 human figures holding
hands to represent the 1200 children who die as a result of poverty
each day. These were then joined together and stuck on the walls of the
school gymnasium.
- A school social was held that night. It was themed
Make Poverty History and students were encouraged to dress in black and
white. All profits and donations collected were donated to the Oaktree
Foundation.
- White ‘Make Poverty History’
bands were on sale during the day and night.
- The events throughout the day raised over $2000
dollars!!!
The second event we held was called ‘One Day in the
Gym’ and was run on Oaktree’s main fundraising day.
We invited two bands from nearby high schools to play at our school and
charged an entry fee.
Combined, these two events raised over $3000 dollars!!!!!!
We also organised Rose Bay High’s participation in Stand Up
on the 16th of October. We plan to continue this work at college in
2007.
